Accredited teaching artists introduce children to the pleasures of making music in a relaxed, playful, non-performance-oriented setting. You’ll receive CDs and songbooks tied to each session’s unique experiences for use at home. Music Together Online: Rhythm Kids Level 1
In this online experience, kids ages 4 (with prior Music Together experience) – 7 and a parent or caregiver are invited to explore the world of rhythm through our Jaguar Song Collection! The Jaguar Rhythm is adapted from the duple-meter drumming patterns of Puerto Rico’s Bomba dancing, an interplay where the drummer tries to follow the dancer’s movements. We’ll get to try it out ourselves with the song “Bailen Niños.” We’ll sing, dance and drum along to the lively patterns of “Ayiko, Ayiko,” a welcome song from Southern Ghana. In “Singing’ My Song,” we’ll sing and move to our own song…and everyone else’s! And, perhaps best of all, we’ll get to experience the joys of being a “Jaguar in the Jungle.” All 22 selections in this collection have been chosen and arranged specifically to support each student’s music development. This class meets weekly for ten weeks.

Mixed Age Classes - Outdoors

Instructors: Melissa Ludwa, Caitlyn Bodine, and Annie Dastoli

Music Together® Mixed Age classes are for children from birth through age 5 and their parent(s) or caregiver. The Music Together® award winning curriculum is used in a playful, developmentally appropriate environment which utilizes singing, moving, playing instruments and making music in a fun 45-minute class. This type of music making is shown to enhance higher order thinking skills in our children, which supports all learning and provides an opportunity for children to attain basic music competence that is needed before learning an instrument.

How do outdoor classes work? See the details here.

Music Together Generations

Instructors: Caitlyn Bodine

If you’ve ever wished for an extra set or two of grandparents, then we have a class for you! The Generations music class is a Mixed-Age Music Together class with the sweetest twist: the addition of senior participants. Kids and their grownups visit their “Musical Grandfriends” at a local retirement home or senior center and spend time making music as a large extended family.

These intergenerational music classes for seniors and children are popular retirement home activities because the fun songs and children’s liveliness and laughter help to brighten up everybody’s day. Making music together connects people in ways that few other activities can, and this type of class bridges the generations by helping seniors, staff, parents, and kids form new and satisfying relationships

Crescendo offers Music Together Generations at Friendship Village of Kalamazoo (1400 N. Drake Road, Kalamazoo, 49009).

Online Music Together Babies

Instructor: Melissa Ludwa

Babies love music. This will come as no surprise to you if you’ve ever soothed your newborn to sleep with a lullaby or bounced him to the beat of your favorite song. But did you know your son or daughter is also a natural musicmaker? It’s true: we are each born equipped to respond to music from a remarkably early age. There is a lot you can do to nurture your new little musician and making music together from the very beginning will lead to a lifetime of shared musical enjoyment. The Music Together® Babies Class will start you on the path to becoming a musical family. Specifically designed for infants eight months and younger, this 10-week introduction to Music Together® allows babies to embrace, enjoy, and express their inborn musicality.

Rhythm Kids

Instructor: Melissa Ludwa

Rhythm Kids classes are for ages 4-6 and a caregiver. In each weekly 45 minute music class, we drum, sing, move, and play to rhythms inspired by musical traditions around the world, from West African Gahu, to Japanese Taiko, to Brazilian Samba, just to name a few.

Students learn to compose, choreograph, and conduct as they play—and play with!—a variety of musical instruments: West African djembe drums, percussion instruments, and, the most important instruments of all, their voices and their bodies. As your big kid learns to think and create like a musician, they’ll also build musical connections to the global community.

Important note: There will be djembe drums for use in class. It is encouraged, but not required, that your child have a djembe drum to use at home. If you need an appropriate drum, we will have a high quality djembe drum for purchase, or you may make your own arrangements for a drum.
