Mixed Age Classes - Outdoors

Instructors: Melissa Ludwa, Annie Dastoli, Angie Biehl, and Caitlyn Bodine

Music Together® Mixed Age classes are for children from birth through age 5 and their parent(s) or caregiver. The Music Together® award-winning curriculum is used in a playful, developmentally appropriate environment that utilizes singing, moving, playing instruments, and making music in a fun 45-minute class. This type of music-making is shown to enhance higher-order thinking skills in our children, supporting all learning and providing an opportunity for children to attain basic music competence before learning an instrument.

How do outdoor classes work? See the details here.

Outdoor Mixed Age classes are held at Winchell DOC Church (2208 Winchell Ave.), Portage United Church of Christ (2731 W. Milham Ave.), Mrs. O’s Preschool (8025 Moorsbridge Rd.), and Richland Area Community Center (9400 East CD Avenue).

Class Session:

The Harmonica Song Collection has a wonderful assortment of Music Together favorites, such as the foot stompin’ “Old Brass Wagon” and the playful “Two Little Kitty Cats.” Your family will delight in “cloc-ing” and “oinc-ing” along to the traditional Argentinian folk song, “Vengan a Ver,” as well as taking time for a snuggle as you sing along to the soft and soothing lullaby, “Raisins and Almonds.” In addition to your weekly classes, your tuition includes materials for you to use at home, access to the online Family Music Zone, and a family newsletter full of resources and music-making ideas. Join us for this session and fill your family’s summer with music, fun, and friendship!

Rhythm Kids Outdoors

Instructors: Melissa Ludwa and Angie Biehl

Rhythm Kids classes are for ages 4-6 and a caregiver. In each 45-minute class, students learn to compose, choreograph, and conduct as they play—and play with!—a variety of musical instruments: West African djembe drums, percussion instruments, and, the most important instruments of all, their voices and their bodies. As your big kid learns to think and create like a musician, they’ll also build musical connections to the global community.

How do outdoor classes work? See the details here.

Important note: There will be djembe drums for use in class. It is encouraged, but not required, that your child have a djembe drum to use. If you need an appropriate drum, we will have a high-quality djembe drum for purchase, or you may make your own arrangements for a drum.

Class Session:

This semester we’ll explore the Tiger Rhythm with drumming patterns from Mali and India. Children will discover the enchantment of Indian music through the song “Chandamaame Raave” and even learn to sing a verse in Telugu! We’ll explore body percussion, scatting, and part singing with “Singing in Harmony.” “Tiger, Tigress in the Night” will delight children with imaginative play, drumming, and dancing. And with “Tiger Tracks,” we’ll get to prowl and growl as we follow a tiger through his day.

Music Together Generations

Instructors: Caitlyn Bodine

If you’ve ever wished for an extra set or two of grandparents, then we have a class for you! The Generations music class is a Mixed-Age Music Together class with the sweetest twist: the addition of senior participants. Kids and their grownups visit their “Musical Grandfriends” at a local retirement home or senior center and spend time making music as a large extended family.

These intergenerational music classes for seniors and children are popular retirement home activities because the fun songs and children’s liveliness and laughter help to brighten up everybody’s day. Making music together connects people in ways that few other activities can, and this type of class bridges the generations by helping seniors, staff, parents, and kids form new and satisfying relationships

Crescendo offers Music Together Generations at Friendship Village of Kalamazoo (1400 N. Drake Road, Kalamazoo, 49009).
