Accredited teaching artists introduce children to the pleasures of making music in a relaxed, playful, non-performance-oriented setting. You’ll receive CDs and songbooks tied to each session’s unique experiences for use at home. Mixed Age Classes

Instructors: Melissa Ludwa, Annie Dastoli, Angie Biehl

Music Together® Mixed Age classes are for children from birth through age 5 and their parent(s) or caregiver. The Music Together® award-winning curriculum is used in a playful, developmentally appropriate environment that utilizes singing, moving, playing instruments, and making music in a fun 45-minute class. This type of music-making is shown to enhance higher-order thinking skills in our children, supporting all learning and providing an opportunity for children to attain basic music competence before learning an instrument.

Please read the following Covid-19 protocols carefully. If none of our in-person options are appropriate for your family, we invite you to consider online learning options.
**For in-person, indoor classes:  We request that only VACCINATED adults bring a child to class. All children ages 0-5 who are attending must be registered for the class. All children ages 3 and up must wear a mask for class. All participating adults must wear a mask.
For in-person, outdoor classes: Participants will be asked to maintain a distance of 4 to 6 feet apart during class. Masks/vaccines will not be required for outdoor classes. In case of inclement weather, classes will be held online via Zoom.
If you are not vaccinated or do not wish to share your vaccination status, please choose an outdoor class or an online class option. WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO AMEND OUR POLICIES AT A LATER DATE IF CDC OR STATE GUIDELINES REQUIRE IT.

Mixed Age classes are held at Crescendo Academy of Music, Winchell Third Christian Reformed Church (2400 Winchell Ave.), and the big red barn at 1700 N 5th Street, Kalamazoo.

Class Session:

In the Drum Song Collection, you’ll learn twenty-five beloved Music Together songs and activities you can recreate at home. Rhythm Kids

Instructors: Melissa Ludwa

Rhythm Kids classes are for ages 4-7 and a caregiver. In each 45-minute class, students learn to compose, choreograph, and conduct as they play—and play with!—a variety of musical instruments: West African djembe drums, percussion instruments, and, the most important instruments of all, their voices and their bodies. As your big kid learns to think and create like a musician, they’ll also build musical connections to the global community.

Please read the following Covid-19 protocols carefully. If none of our in-person options are appropriate for your family, we invite you to consider online learning options.

Class Session:

This semester, your child will learn to drum, sing, move to new rhythms, work in ensembles, conduct, improvise, and play dynamic music games! The Tree Frog Collection contains energetic triple-meter rhythms inspired by Japanese Taiko drumming. We’ll explore these patterns in “Suzume Odori” (Sparrow Dance), as we adapt the intricate steps danced in festivals throughout Japan. “Canta Coquí” (Singing Frog) has two distinct song phrases that evoke the abundant Puerto Rican tree frogs singing and hopping everywhere! We’ll celebrate the beautiful rivers and mountains of Japan in “Tree Frog Song,” while learning a delightful Japanese hand-clapping game. And “Tree Frog Night” will give us a chance to experience a night in the life of a tree frog! All 22 song selections have been chosen and arranged specifically to support your child’s music development.

Important note: There will be djembe drums for use in class. It is encouraged, but not required, that your child have a djembe drum to use. If you need an appropriate drum, we will have a high-quality djembe drum for purchase, or you may make your own arrangements for a drum.

Music Together Babies

Instructor: Melissa Ludwa

Babies love music and are primed to be music-makers from an early age.

Babies love music. This will come as no surprise to you if you’ve ever soothed your newborn to sleep with a lullaby or bounced him to the beat of your favorite song. But did you know your son or daughter is also a natural musicmaker? It’s true: We are each born equipped to respond to music from a remarkably early age; there is a lot you can do to nurture your new little musician. Making music together from the very beginning will lead to a lifetime of shared musical enjoyment. The Music Together® Babies Class will start you on the path to becoming a musical family. Specifically designed for infants eight months and younger, this 10-week introduction to Music Together allows babies to embrace, enjoy, and express their inborn musicality.
